ACIS Newsletter – Issue 31, December 2022

Welcome

Dear Esteemed Members,

Welcome to our 31st issue of ACIS News! We produce a quarterly newsletter - sent around in February, May, August, and November (approximately) - to keep the wonderful members of ACIS informed of our initiatives and for members to directly communicate with our Society. We publish job announcements, meetings of interests to our society, career development opportunities, any exciting research that you would like to share with us and much more. To everyone up to date with the on-goings in our colloids society, please send your suggestions and items for the next newsletter to christine.browne@monash.edu or Stuart Brown at s3399895@student.rmit.edu.au.

President’s Corner

As this newsletter goes to press, I hope yours, or your students’ abstracts have been submitted for the upcoming 34ACSSSC. A tradition going back over 50 years and the launching pad for many colloid and interface science/engineering/technology careers, the power of this networking opportunity cannot be underestimated. All the more so as the first in-person ‘stucon’ since the Churchill conference three years ago. If you are at any stage of your PhD candidature, be sure to attend and have your eyes opened to the bigger picture and your future in it. Early career and established researchers are also strongly encouraged to attend. Registration doesn’t close until the 9th of January, but the organising committee would really appreciate your early registration for planning purposes.

At this time, the call for nominations for Director positions on the Board is open for 2023-2025. We have two Directors rotating off the Board at the next AGM so there is ample opportunity for other members to get involved. If we receive more than two nominations, there will be an election online prior to the AGM so that the new Director can be announced at the AGM. The AGM is being held at the 34ACSSSC at RMIT University on Thursday 2nd February 2023. In person and online attendance will be possible for members. For nomination you must be a financial member, and be nominated by two financial members of ACIS, using the form found here, and sent to the Secretary via acis.enquiries@gmail.com. Nominations will close on Monday 16th January 2023.

The Board is also looking for volunteers to organise future events including ACIS2024. Please drop us a line to find out what is involved, make a suggestion and/or volunteer. It is a rewarding experience to serve this community and you also never know if a future employer, referee or assessor will be impressed by your passion and ideas in the process.

At this time, I also note that applications are open for nominations for two important ACIS awards that are a great value-add to anyone’s CV:

Applications are due by the 15th of January 2023. Details on eligibility and how to apply are available on the ACIS website using the links above. Do your student or colleague a favour and nominate them!

Finally, for academic colleagues - I would like to congratulate those who have been successful in recent national competitive grant rounds. I also pass on my commiserations for the many who missed out in this very tight funding environment. When you are ready, dust yourself off and consider resubmitting including your year of extra excellent pilot data and expert pre-review by surrounding colleagues. Often it is a repolished grant that gets funded! Thanks finally to all the supportive and constructive assessors in our research community.

Looking forward to catching up at RMIT early in the new year.

Erica Wanless (President)

34th Australian Colloid and Surface Science Student Conference

The Australasian Colloid and Interface Society (ACIS) is pleased to announce the 34th Australian Colloid and Surface Science Student Conference which will be held in the Melbourne CBD, Australia, from Tuesday 31st January - Friday 3rd February 2023. We encourage PhD students with an interest in colloid and interface science to attend as it is a great opportunity to present your work in an informal, supportive and friendly environment. ECRs and staff are also strongly encouraged to attend and support the community. To encourage a large participation from the community during these uncertain times the conference will be offered for in-person and online attendees; however, in-person attendance is strongly encouraged. Those who are able to attend in-person will also have the benefit of attending the many networking and social events planned for the conference.
